The Education Ministry's Performance Grading Index (PGI) is an annual survey that assesses the performance of states and union territories in school education.
The PGI uses a grading system with 10 grades, with Daksh being the highest grade (scoring above 940 out of 1,000 points) and Akanshi-3 being the lowest (up to 460 points).
Chandigarh and Punjab were the top performers in school education for 2021-22.
However, none of the states or union territories achieved the highest grade of Daksh.
Chandigarh, Punjab, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu secured grades of Prachesta-2 or Prachesta-3, which were below the top five grades.
The survey assesses five key domains of school education: learning outcomes and quality, access, infrastructure and facilities, equity, and governance processes.
Parameters within these domains include learning outcomes in language, maths, science, social science, access to education, infrastructure availability (e.g., labs, computer labs, books), equity among different student categories, and educational governance and management.
The report suggests that states can take domain-wise action to improve their scores in the assessed areas.
The PGI survey has been conducted annually since 2017-18 and provides insights into the status of school education in states and union territories.
