Government in Rajasthan approved a proposal to form 19 new districts and three new divisions in the State.
The decision taken at a State Cabinet meeting will take the total number of districts in the country’s largest State to 50.
On March 17, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had announced in the Assembly that new districts will be created based on the proposal of the high-level Ram Lubhaya Committee.
The move is a step towards decentralisation of power.
It will also improve governance and bring relief to common people, farmers, landholders, and beneficiaries of schemes who have to cover long distances to reach the district headquarters for government-related work.
How a new district is formed in india?
The power to create new districts or alter or abolish existing districts rests with the State governments.
This can either be done through an executive order or by passing a law in the State Assembly.
Many States prefer the executive route by simply issuing a notification in the official gazette.
The Centre has no role to play in the alteration of districts or creation of new ones. States are free to decide.
The Home Ministry comes into the picture when a State wants to change the name of a district.
The State government's request is sent to other departments and agencies such as the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, Intelligence Bureau, Department of Posts, Geographical Survey of India Sciences.
A no-objection certificate may be issued after examining their replies.
