Mahadayi river
Mahadayi river originates in the Western Ghats, from the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Khanapur taluk of Karnataka Belagavi district.
Flowing westward, it enters Goa from the Sattari taluk of North Goa districts.
A number of streams join the flow of the river to form the Mandovi which is one of two major rivers that flow through Goa.
It joins the Arabian Sea at Panaji.
The Mahadayi river, also spelt Mhadei or Mahadeyi, stretches 111-km. Over two-thirds of the river’s stretch lies in Goa (76 km).
Kalasa-Banduri Nala project
Kalasa and Banduri tributaries of the Mahadayi (Mandovi) river.
The Kalasa Banduri Nala project aims to divert water from Mahadayi to satisfy the drinking water needs of Belagavi, Dharwad, Bagalkot and Gadag districts.
A conflict between Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra has prevented the project from moving forward even though it was first planned in the early 1980s.
In November 2010, the UPA government at the Centre had set up a tribunal to settle disputes between Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.
In 2018, the tribunal awarded 13.42 TMC water from Mahadayi river basin to Karnataka, 1.33 TMC to Maharashtra and 24 TMC to Goa.
The same was notified by the Union Government in February 2020.
