INS Kirpan is a Khukri class missile corvette and able to displace 1,350 tonne.
It was built by Garden Reach shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata
It was commissioned into the Navy on January 12, 1991.
The ship is fitted with a medium range gun, 30 mm close range guns, chaff launchers, and surface to surface missiles, which enables it to perform a wide variety of roles.
It can perform coastal and offshore patrol, coastal security, surface warfare, anti-piracy, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
The transfer of INS Kirpan from the Indian Navy to the Vietnamese People's Navy (VPN) symbolises the status of Indian Navy being the ‘Preferred Security Partner’ in the Indian Ocean Region and would definitely be a catalyst for enhancing the existing bilateral relations between the two navies
This is the first-ever occasion that India is offering a fully operational corvette to any friendly foreign country
